Backyard Beekeeping - Hands-On Workshop - Now Open
Beekeeping Workshop at the Mindful Farmer Homestead
Saturday, May 9th
Conway, Arkansas (Address to be emailed upon confirmation)
10 AM – 2 PM
Limited participants
Join us for a hands-on beekeeping workshop at the Mindful Farmer homestead in Conway, Arkansas. Whether you’re a curious beginner or looking to get more confident working your own hives, this immersive class will walk you through both the theory and the practice of small-scale, sustainable beekeeping in Arkansas.
What to Expect:
-
Classroom Session (1.5 hours)
We’ll cover hive types, honeybee biology, seasonal hive management in Arkansas, common issues, and how to troubleshoot them, and what a “typical” year of beekeeping looks like here in the South. -
Lunch Break (30 minutes)
Bring a lunch, and we will provide snacks from the garden and drinks throughout the event. We will have honey and honeycomb for tasting along with garden-fresh teas, and locally roasted coffee. -
In-Hive Experience (2 hours)
Get suited up and work bees in our backyard hives! Participants will have the chance to open active colonies, identify brood and queens, and observe real-time hive behavior. We'll also extract honey, and each participant will take home a bottle of fresh, raw honey—harvested that day.
Additional Perks:
- Taste honeycomb on our homemade sourdough bread
- Sip herbal teas grown right here at the homestead
- Take home printed handouts and reference materials to guide your beekeeping journey
What to Bring:
- A lunch of your choice
- Bee suit or veil if you have one (we’ll have a few extras on hand)
- Closed-toe shoes and light-colored long sleeves are recommended, as well as a hat, and be prepared for a warm summer day
- Note: Some beekeepers, like myself, prefer to beekeep veil-free. However, this is at your own risk. If you are allergic to bees, we do not recommend attending.
This class is capped, so reserve your spot early. We'll send full location details once you're registered.
